American Tall Tales have always fascinated me. You can tell a lot about a culture by what sort of legends they create to explain their origins. On one hand you’ve got the Heroes who personify the positive aspects. However, what I love more are the creatures conjured up to explain the darker aspects of humanity. The monsters. The first one I wanted to explore here was the Sasquatch. As a native Pacific Northwesterner, the ‘squatch has a special place in my heart.
A while back, I was asked to do some exploratory sketches for a certain unnamed company that sells toilet paper with adorable bears. They were looking to redesign their mascots and bring them into 3-D. As most things in the advertising world, things didn’t quite work out the way they expected and they never ended up using any of the work that was done. Maybe if they made their product out of actual bears…
